A collection of all material created for my career as a math teacher
My Vision Statement
I believe students learn best when they are in an environment where their ideas are valued and collaboration between classmates is part of the learning process.
As your teacher, I will:
- Use technology as a way to facilitate student learning.
- Incorporate mathematics into real-life scenarios.
- Encourage students to try every day.
- Encourage all students to continue their academic career and be lifelong learners.
- Respect your peer’s right to learn.
- Be ready to work cooperatively in groups.
- Practice critical thinking skills.
- Participate in class discussions.
- Come to class prepared with completed homework and items.
Professional Growth Plan
My goals for my first year of teaching is to emulate an exemplary math teacher that applies the core concepts learned from the ASU teaching program. That means that I will use inquiry based learning, use research based techniques for instruction, and use technology to supplement my lessons. By using inquiry based lessons that tie content to real world scenarios and challenge my future students, I can create deeper understanding of the mathematical concepts while engaging all my students. Using research based techniques for instruction ensures that I will have an effective pedagogy since my lessons will have activities that incorporate my knowledge on how student’s best learn and retain information. Finally, I will use technology to supplement my lessons to help with comprehensible input and engagement of students.
No matter how prepared one is for something, there will always be something unexpected that comes up or a way to improve upon something. Therefore, I will seek advice and rely on the expertise of my work colleagues and students to grow as a teacher and to build professional relationships. I will also reflect on my teaching practices by keeping a journal to document my journey. Finally, I will seek student feedback at the end of each quarter to gauge effectiveness and engagement.
To continue my professional growth, I will join the National Council of Teachers for Mathematics which is a prestigious organization that publishes research based methods for teaching mathematics and holds yearly conferences for members to share their pedagogy. I will also join the Arizona Association of Teachers Mathematics to discuss mathematical pedagogy and learn from experienced teachers within the community. These two organizations will help me learn new teaching strategies as well as receive feedback on my strategies so that I can continue improving my pedagogy.
Within my first five years of teaching, I want to establish myself as a knowledgeable and capable teacher in a school that shares my philosophy on education. To create student engagement in mathematics, I want to create a mathletes club for students to compete in math competitions and discuss the art of problem solving. I also want to first teach a middle school math grade for at least two consecutive years and then teach high school math for at least two consecutive years so that I can gain first-hand experience of student learning in secondary education.
